Lupus in Machina

"It is not too late yet, Erik," she said. "You can still end this nightmare. Take the pills, and end it." Her eyes were pale blue, hinting with the deepest and sincerest hope for me, and filled with a sadness an ocean would not fit all the tears she might shed for me. If she were still alive to shed them.
I slumped to the floor, pills in hand, amidst the trophies of a night I do not remember in the slightest. Bones of pure white, scattered along the ground. Tatters of clothing ripped and shredded covered by the deepest shadows in the corners of the watch tower, where I had taken refuge.
"Does it have to be this way?" I asked. I didn't even recognize my own voice, as cracked and hallow as it seemed to be. My throat burned as if I had swallowed the entire Inferno that was Hell in one setting. My body hot and nearly jello like, and at the same time, I felt strangely cold.

Lupus in Machina ZhaneAugustine
We're presented with a classic monster tale in this story with a perfectly Steampunk environment.  It grabbed my attention and kept it, plus it made me laugh out loud at times.  I adore the ending.

ZhaneAugustine wins:
• A journal and news feature, spotlighting five pieces of his work. (Any kind of work on DA, writing or otherwise.)
• A digital line art character bust image by me.*

2nd place goes to:

CheatThis was the end.  I knew it, as I had known for years, yet the feeling of it rocked my body .  I couldn't feel.  I couldn't think.  I could only be.  But how?  How could I exist?  It made no sense, and it wasn't fair.  Fair.  It's such a silly word, really.  If it's true that nothing is fair, why even have the word?  Why not just say everyone and everything cheats at living and breathing and being? I knew I was cheating, and that wasn't fair, not to them.
I had only loved him.  That's it, nothing more.  I only wanted to be his, to be with him, to hold him, and to be loved back.  If I think about it now, it might have been too much to ask, but I did anyway.  I pushed and pushed my way into his life and he accepted me.  He opened his arms and I leapt into them.  How could I not?  He meant so much to me without

She spoke in a calm voice even though right now they were fleeing for their lives. "We needed the money and they wouldn't let a girl work." The SacrificeEndless darkness is swallowing me whole. The only thing I know is that the floor is cold and hard, the walls are impenetrable, and the only sounds are drops of water hitting something metal. I seem to be in one piece. It feels as though there is a hammer pounding in my head and a wrench sticking in my gut, but I am alive.
Endless questions filter though my groggy mind. How did I get here? Where am I? What day is it? I try to recall my last memory before I woke up in this god forsaken blackness.  I remember a castle; a very elaborate castle with red velvet curtains and crystal chandeliers.  I remember there was a grand garden with every colour rose imaginable. I remember a woman with a ruffled teal dress and her lips, oh how I remember those lips.
I feel around the floor for a hint of familiarity. My hands grasp nothing.  I crawl deeper into the abyss; my hands grasp nothing. I reach out as far as I am able; my hands grasp a bar, and then anothe

Contest Entry-Love EternalPlacing my hand upon the rotted wood I feel a twinge of uncertainty. A moldy sign covers the mouth to this cavern, "WARNING: Closed due to cave in." A lie. The townsfolk believe this place to be haunted.
It's not, of course. I have been coming back to this sign for the past three days. I know what really happened here, and I am the only man who even remembers what this cave used to be like.  Bracing myself I rip the sign away and deliver a solid kick to the barricade. It collapses with a wet crunch.
Reaching into my pocket I produce my Luminos, a small brass sphere dotted with several glass portholes. Giving it a twist, the radium core illuminates, casting a sickly green glow around the cave mouth.  Tossing it up in the air kick starts the magnetic repulsor, allowing it to orbit my head freely.
I wipe away a single tear as I step into the cave. The Luminos was Tatyana's invention.  It was her project that led to this moment.

Ghostlit Dead Girl CuddlesI knew I couldn't do what she asked the moment her eyes met mine. It was clear that I didn't know what I was getting myself into from the moment I saw the girl sitting on the stairs. Apparently I was too soft to say no to a fifteen-year-old that I found on the way in to the mine. I did what she wanted regardless of my own feelings or reputation.
__
I was wandering through the rambling maze of my former workplace; the mines when I found it. I had finished working at the mines for the day. The mines had shut down for the last time that day. I was lucky because I worked in the research laboratory instead of digging coal after an accident an age ago. Australia had faced a horrible war one thousand years past and all that was left was a thousand people and mines. There were so many mines. The black dirt is hardened from all the fires that broke out during the riots that depleted our numbers just that little bit more. One thousand people on a huge island and none of them wanted to be here.

Insanity Never Ceases to Exist     We walked for days, Lucy and I, and at times, I had to carry my little sister. She was so fragile, so tiny. If I lost her to something as stupid as the cold wind, a chill at the most, I would never forgive myself. So therefore, I had given her my jacket.
Lucy began to slow once more as she became tired. Her face was pale from blood-loss. Her wound, I thought to myself, but we couldn't stop, not yet, it was not safe. I could hear her bones cracking with every step she took. Like gears. Actually, I laughed softly to myself, they were gears. Not entirely, there were still human organs, and bones, and all that important stuff, but my dear sister had needed a replacement ankle, and my father, I don't know how, had given it to her.
He never told me what to do if she needed one again, so I assumed she would never need one again, but to my horror, she was suffering now, Her foot became stiff frequently from th

I thought I lost you...Five years. Five years of searching every corner of the earth for him. Every nook and cranny, and trust me, there are a lot of them. The last place I expected to find him was in a farm. He hated farms. He wasn't there either. I checked every single one. No trace of him.
This is driving my insane. How many other places were there to search? Well, not too many, but then again this Earth can surprise you.
Surprises. I hate surprises. Life would just be easier without surprises. If there weren't any surprises, I would still be alive. The doctors would have known that I was born with a defect that made me vulnerable to cancer.  They would have healed me before I got sick.
I still remember my death. It was a slow, painful one. I remember every detail, the sound of crying that still echoes in my ear, the way my breathing slowed down, but most of all the sole tear that slid down my cheek as I slipped away from life. That sensation lingered on my cheek for two years.

Little Ella's words rang so clear in his ears that it could have been the day nine years ago… the day of the attack.  Waves of grief washed over him as he remembered her plaintive, hiccuping sobs.  The bitter memories drove a spasm of pain through his heart.  Daddy, but I didn't.  I didn't.  Honest!
Perhaps though, the recollection of his furious retort haunted him even more.  Don't lie to me.  I'm angry enough!  I've told you not to touch them and now you've lost them!

A Divine IllusionDaniel was frozen in place, eyes wide in a mixture of fear and awe. Emily stood before him, so close that she was within arms reach. Tears leaked from his eyes unbidden as he looked upon her ghost. It was Emily but it wasn't- her form translucent with the slightest glow cascading over her body.  She shimmered when she moved and he smiled- it reminded him of the glitter she used to wear on her cheeks.
"Daniel..." she spoke in a hushed whisper and there was an echo to her voice. The sound moved in slow motion and with it came a warm rush of air blowing gently over his face.
She raised her hand and traced the outline of his jaw sending tingles over his skin. "You've changed," she said with a wistful smile and he couldn't help but smile back and say, "You haven't."
He reached out and was surprised to find that he could touch her, her body firm and warm under his hands. He embraced her, overcome with emotion he faltered- knees shaking he fell to the floor, taking her with him.

Aversion AffectivityAt that juncture she morphed into lines luminescent and lucid.  However, I could feel her energy converged, repetitively stirred, then re-compacted in these lacey orbs that twirl and burrow against my being.   I sense that all of you is here, just dividing.  Too weak to project the fervor, I remain to grasp.
Frequencies vibe through Transa's voice "I … Am … Here," her mouth did not animate, on the contrary it seeped glistening blue.  She groaned confusion and hummed comfort… "buuuttt sometimes I drift away and return." Her chortle was legitimate throughout this sentence.  Suddenly her cords sparked with quick knowledge protruding reassuring echoes, "Your assumption of dividends is near accurate, the other energies, the Vims give my parts back," sighs for a breath, "Vehemence are distant."
In a feeble breath I mumbled "Let us get to a safe place," though I know she can hear me otherwise. &

Ghostly HappeningsThe hands of the large tower met at the tip of the clock, whimsical chimes sent echoes over the city's skyline. The time of midnight was nigh, it was time for him to leave.
His blond hair shivered in the wind while his hazel eyes glanced over the towering buildings.
"You should have left by now, you know how—."
"Yes, yes, I know. I am leaving within the hour. Do not worry."
"Oh I wouldn't be the one worrying and you know it."
"Leave me be."
The brunette man cloaked by shadows released a sigh. Minuscule gusts of air fell from his mouth, spreading through the night, wrapping wind around the clock tower. Moving his head the slightest bit, a breeze floated through the gaps of the glassless windows. Hidden eyes glinting with mischievous light, the brunet clicked his tongue; almost immediately, strong bursts of wind thrashed through the tower, knocking the man's blond counterpart off the tower.
Flipping with acrobatic precision, the blond barely even spared the brunet a glance; instead

Work, I Work for food.
I hate my job
But I must carry on
Even if it's hard to breathe
If I want to live,
I must endure this life.
Run, I'm on the Run
Away from my past,
I left my job behind
As they hunt me down.
But I feel so free.
Pain, Pain I experience
In my chest,
Pounding in my heart
The knife's blade
As I cry.
But the pain beats nothing.
Blood, Blood everywhere.
In my mouth,
On my wounds,
Flowing in my veins.
I bleed an endless river of red.
Hell, Hell feels so close,
Closer than heaven.
I should just give in to the demon in side,
Let the fire burn my body away
As I plead to be set free.
Demon, there's a Demon in me.
He cries to be set free,
To hear,
To destroy
And kill all.
I pain everyday but he mustn't be released,
But I fear the chains aren't strong enough.
Love, I cannot Love.
It's an attachment I can't risk.
But that girl,
She's so aphrodisiac and enticing.
I can't stop getting near.
I think I'm in love.

:boogie: CONTEST! :boogie:

Welcome to 3AM Perspective's 2012 Writing Contest the eighth annual contest to be held here.  This year, the contest beings on May 24 and ends on September 1st.

:bulletred: THE GOAL:  Write a short story based on the following image.

Click for deviation

:bulletblue: RULES:

1. Story must somehow clearly tie into the image shown.
2. Story should be no more than 6000 words.
3. No script format, please.
4. The story may be any genre you wish, so long as it complies with Rule 1.
5. I'm no longer accepting poems.  Sorry, but I don't feel I can properly judge and critique them.
6. All entries will receive a written critique; a short public one and an expanded private one via notes.  The public critique will be posted in my journal along with the winner's announcement, even if the piece does not place.  If you do not wish to be given a critique, please say so when you send in your entry.  Otherwise, by entering, you automatically agree for me to post a public critique.
7. Please link back to either my front page, the journal, or the contest image in your artist's comments. Just saying "this is for resuki's contest" doesn't work.  No one knows who that is.  This way people can get a look at what image you were supposed to write about.

:bulletred: JUDGING:
I will personally judge the contest.  Here are the rules about the judging:

1. Points are awarded for creativity, emotion, and generally how well the story grabs and holds my attention.  How much I like the story will be a large part if my decision.
2. Points are awarded for how the story ties into the image
3. Points are awarded for grammar, voice and spelling.  Ignoring the basic rules of writing will most definitely affect things, but may or may not destroy your chances.
4. Good endings will get you everywhere. :)

I went home, knowing of the tragedy that has taken my love.  Before I walked in the front to see my mother on the phone, tears falling down her cheeks.  She looked at me and hung up the phone.
"There's been an accident," She said.  "At the Factory, an explostion occured, everyone got out expect Cassidy.

Healing HandsA figure with light blonde hair descended rapidly while pulling a fragile girl with darker blonde tresses down a winding staircase. The person leading looked up at the girl and revealed a boyish face donning a pair of safety goggles.
"Come on. Just a little further Delilah," spoke the boy in front with a decidedly girlish voice. A little to high pitched to be a the voice of a boy. "You are safe now. Don't worry those men can't harm you while I am here." The frail girl looked faint and made no move to respond. The boyish girl turned to face forward. "I'm so sorry. Its my fault isn't it?" She spoke in a calm voice even though right now they were fleeing for their lives. "We needed the money and they wouldn't let a girl work." She looked up remembering how they had gotten into this mess in the first place.

"Sister! Sister!" Delilah cried as she starred at the empty cupboard.
"What is it?" the girl asked as she walked into the small

The SacrificeEndless darkness is swallowing me whole.

Ethereal NightmareShad jammed the button down.  Gears began to grind and turn as a low hum filled his ears.  He stepped over to the entrance of the electro-magnetic chamber, his latest invention.  He paused at the threshold.  What if the spirit chamber didn't work?  He swallowed back a stab of guilt.  It has to work… it has to, he thought.

Shatter, fragile things Shatter.
